David Gluckman is one of the world’s greatest pioneers in the branding field. He has been creating new ideas for brands since 1969 and spent most of his time working in the drinks business, mainly for IDV (later, Diageo).
David Gluckman was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa on 1st November 1938, the day Sea Biscuit and War Admiral fought out the race of the century at Pimlico Park, Baltimore. Educated in Johannesburg, he joined a local advertising agency after university and soon fell in love with the business of ideas and problem-solving.
He made the pilgrimage to London in 1961 and worked as an account executive on Procter & Gamble, Kerrygold, Lyons teas and several Unilever accounts. Always a frustrated copywriter, he escaped into product development in 1969, met a man from IDV and his life changed forever.
His portfolio of brands includes Baileys Irish Cream, Sheridan’s, Smirnoff Black Label, Aqua Libra, Purdey’s, The Singleton, Ciroc and Tanqueray Ten.
David Gluckman also released a compelling autobiography which is crammed with entertaining anecdotes drawn from over forty years of brand creation in and around the drinks business.
“That s*it will never sell!” tells, in sparkling, laugh-filled detail the unexpected story of David Gluckman’s rise from drinks dreamer to global drinks inventor.
Following the publishing of “That s*it will never sell!”, David has become an active member of the LinkedIn community in the fields of brand development, passing on his experience, his thoughts, and his comments on his own and others’ ideas. He has also become an outspoken commentator on the emerging field of NO-LO alcohol drinks.
”That s*it will never sell!” has become a brand manual for a number of start-up entrepreneurs, especially in the drinks business.
“David is a wealth of knowledge. His presentations are doused with provocation, humour and data-insights into the marketing industry from a lifetime of experience of new product development, especially in the drinks sectors. "

'Without hesitation, David Gluckman’s talk at Trinity College was one of the calendar highlights of the year. Informative, witty and engaging! David gave an incredible depth of insight into client relations, responding to a brief, managing the design process from brief through ideation, prototyping and eventually from testing to launch."

"David is an astonishing speaker. The creator of some of the world's most well-known and distinctive drinks brands, his creativity, vision and modesty are extraordinary. The stories he tells behind some of the brands he has created over the past 40 years are breath-taking. If you ever want to hear a speaker talking about the products he made, with style, dry wit and great thoughtfulness, David is your man."
