Noreena Hertz is a recognised thought leader and economist with an enviable track record in predicting global trends. She has advised some of the world’s leading business and political figures on strategy, economic and geo-political risks, digital transformation, Generation K and millennials. She is also an early adopter of AI and has continued researching it as part of her academic research.
Noreena graduated university at 19 and by 23 was advising the Russian government on economic reforms and investors on M&A transactions, as the Russian economy opened up to capitalism. By 29, she was contributing economic knowledge to the governments of Israel, Egypt, Palestine and Jordan in a bid to assist the Middle East peace process.
The Observer has named her “one of the world’s leading thinkers”. Vogue calls her “one of the world’s most inspiring women” and the Guardian has identified her as “one of the top British Public Intellectuals”. She sits on the board of Warner Music Group.
Noreena’s best-selling books, Eyes Wide Open: How to Make Smart Decisions in a Confusing World, IOU: The Debt Threat and The Silent Takeover have been published in more than 22 countries.
Hertz is a sought after broadcaster and commentator in Europe and the US and has appeared in flagship television programmes including the BBC, CNN and CBS. She has been interviewed on shows including Charlie Rose and Hard Talk, and her work has been the subject of three broadcast documentaries. Her writings have been published in The Financial Times, The Guardian, Der Spiegel, The Washington Post, The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, among others.
Noreena is an accomplished speaker. She has given Keynote speeches at TED, The World Economic Forum in Davos and Google Zeitgeist and has moderated sessions at such gatherings as well, sharing platforms with President Bill Clinton, James Wolfensohn, David Beckham and Professor Stephen Hawking, amongst others.
From 2007 to 2008, Noreena was as a member of Citigroup’s Politics and Economics Global Advisory Board. Between 2012 and 2013, Noreena joined the Advisory Group guiding McKinsey’s CEO Dominic Barton’s Inclusive Capitalism Taskforce.
Hertz’s thinking was the inspiration for Product (RED), which has raised hundreds of millions of dollars for the fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa. Most recently she has been exploring the world of today’s teenagers, who she has coined “Generation K”, with articles published in the UK, US, Europe and China.
In 2017, Noreena became the first non-US voice on the country’s largest radio network, Sirirus XM, as she unveiled a new radio show, MegaHertz: London Calling, which boasts 64 million listeners. In it she provides insight and analysis into happenings in Europe and also a European perspective on US activity. Her former role as ITV News’ Economics Editor saw her take charge on an intriguing time, which spanned the Referendum and its aftermath, the invoking of Article 50 and a General Election.
Noreena came to the field of AI early. In 2013 she put together a major machine learning initiative that looked at whether – by deploying Artificial Intelligence – she was able to predict elections better than pollsters. She did. Noreena is also involved in advising on its practical applications (and limitations) both in her roles as non-executive Board Member of Warner Music Group and in her government and corporate advisory work.
In June 2018, Noreena hosted a major AI event at UCL which brought together some of the leading thinkers in the field from academia.
Noreena has a PhD from Cambridge University and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. She is Visiting Professor at University College London. She has held professorships at Erasmus University and Utrecht University and fellowships at the University of Cambridge and the London School of Economics.
