About

Sir Ivor Roberts

Sir Ivor Roberts is one of the most experienced and highly respected British diplomats alive today. He first entered Her Majesty’s diplomatic service in 1968 working in the West African Department. Since then he has traversed the globe through postings in the Middle East, the Balkans, Western Europe, Australia and even the Pacific state of Vanuatu at the time of a rebellion.

His skill and experience resulted in him working on the European Community’s Common Agricultural Policy and on the European Parliament.

In the 1980’s he became Head of the Economic and Commercial Department and Agricultural Adviser based in Canberra, Australia.

After four years in Madrid as Minister in the British Embassy, he was appointed Chargé d’Affaires and Consul General in Belgrade in 1994 and became the UK’s first ambassador to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. He conducted vital negotiations on behalf of international mediators and was involved in the negotiations for the release of British soldiers held hostage by the Bosnian Serbs. He left Belgrade at the end of 1997, taking a year off to write and lecture about his personal experiences in the former Yugoslavia.

In 1995 he was made a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (CMG) and Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (KCMG) in 2000.

Sir Ivor served as British Ambassador to the Republic of Ireland for four years prior to his final appointment as Ambassador to Rome from 2003 to 2006. His retirement coincided with his election as the President of Trinity College Oxford.

Sir Ivor speaks fluent Italian, French and Spanish and passable Serbo-Croatian. He is also a patron of the Venice in Peril Fund and was for many years chairman of the Council of the British School of Archaeology and Fine Art in Rome. He also chairs the Keats-Shelley Memorial Association. In 2020, Sir Ivor became Chair of Trustees of the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra.

Sir Ivor’s expertise extends to captivating lectures on topics such as “The Troubles,” East/West relations, and terrorism. Having once served as the head of counterterrorism in the FCO, he offers unique insights into the complexities of addressing security challenges. Sir Ivor’s engaging presentations also delve into war crimes, diplomacy, and diplomatic practice, drawing from his extensive diplomatic career that spans nine countries, from Lebanon to Vanuatu.

In 2009, Sir Ivor revamped Satow’s Diplomatic Practice, hailed as the ultimate guide to international diplomacy. His memoir, Conversations with Milošević, chronicled the Bosnian war in 2016. Now, on August 29, 2023, Sir Ivor proudly announces the release of the latest edition of Satow’s Diplomatic Practice, showcasing his enduring commitment to diplomatic literature.
