What is Black History Month?

Black History Month is observed throughout October in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and all through February in the United States, Canada and many other countries around the world. The month-long campaign sets out to empower the global message of racial equality and celebrates the achievements, history and contributions of Black individuals and communities. It was first established in 1976 in the United States by the late historian, Carter G. Woodson and the ASALH – the Association for the Study of African American Life and History – with the aim of promoting awareness of Black history and the ongoing struggle for civil rights resulting from racial inequality.

Traditionally, Black History Month has aimed to empower African Americans, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Latinx, Black British, Black Canadian and African people. Today, the campaign has expanded to celebrate the subtle but significant differences in culture, language and customs between all people throughout the world and show that nobody should ever be judged by the colour of their skin.

What is a Black History Month speaker?

All of Kruger Cowne’s Black History Month speakers are professionals or individuals with a distinguished background in Black history, heritage and culture. They are passionate about sharing the stories, accomplishments and challenges faced by the Black community, today and throughout history.

Black History Month speakers come from a variety of backgrounds including academia, politics, healthcare, film and television, sports, activism, arts and business amongst others, and use their expertise to inspire, educate and empower audiences on the importance of Black history and the fight for racial justice.

Black History Month speakers break the ice at schools, motivational events, conferences, corporate days and public talks across the UK every year in October and start the conversation Black History Month and cultural sensitivity. If you want to help spread awareness and garner support for racial equality and global diversity, then book the perfect speaker for your next event now.

What kind of topics do Black History Month speakers cover?

The goal, to gain a deeper understanding of the effects of discrimination on the individual and the group, and the extent to which we would all benefit from its eradication.

Allyship:

Allyship speakers typically explore the importance of being an ally to the Black community and its individual members. They discuss the ways in which people, schools and organizations can support and uplift Black voices, exploring fresh perspectives to inspire and empower comradery between people of all races, colours and creeds.

Black History & Milestones:

Black History speakers focus on the figures, significant events and achievements that have shaped the black community over time, from ancient African cultures and the evolution of modern-day civilization to the more recent Civil Rights Movement and beyond.

Civil Rights & Social Justice:

Speakers on civil rights and social justice address the ongoing struggle for racial equality. They explore the history of the civil rights movement, contemporary challenges faced by the Black community and the importance of activism and public pressure in today’s political landscape.

Arts, Culture & Entertainment:

Speakers talking about Black art, culture and entertainment explore the impact and contributions of Black individuals in various creative fields today and throughout history. These speakers highlight the importance of representation in all fields of art and industry and celebrate the achievements of Black individuals who have excelled in their respective careers and life pursuits.
