About

Tom Dixon OBE

Having taught himself to weld, Tom Dixon rose to prominence in the mid-1980s as ‘the talented untrained designer with a line in welded salvage furniture’.  His shop, Space, was intended as both a shop front for his own work, and as a creative think tank for other young designers.

In the late 80s, he joined the Italian company Cappellini, for whom he designed the iconic S Chair.  By the late 90s, he was a household name, and Jack, his polypropolene ‘sitting, stacking, lighting thing’, was a symbol of the age.  In 1998, he was appointed the Head of Design at Habitat, and was Creative Director of the brand until 2008.

Much of his work has been acquired by some of the world’s most famous museums, including The Victoria and Albert Museum, as well as those in New York, Paris and Tokyo.  He regularly exhibits his work throughout the world.

In 2002, he set up his own design company along with business partner David Begg, and the brand gave him a platform from which to launch such iconic designs as Mirror Ball, Rubber Band Chair, Fresh Fat Plastic Wire Series and Beat Light.  In 2004, he teamed up with Proventus to establish Design Research, a design and product development company that includes Artek.  Dixon is now the Creative Director of Artek and his own company.

His own brand now includes an interior design arm, the Design Research Stuido and Luxe Interiors, all of which undertake high profile design work around the globe.  Dixon has won a huge number of awards, including Designer of the Year from London Design Museum and an OBE, presented in 2000.

Each year, Dixon launches his new collections at the Milan International Furniture Fair, and a range of over 50 products are sold across 52 countries through a distributor network.
