The Meek family are Tim, Kerry, Amy (12) and Ella (10). Until a few years ago they led a very normal life but the rut of their everyday existence didn’t make them happy. They lived for the weekend and tried to make them an adventurous highlight to the end of the week. In 2013 they set themselves the challenge of creating 100 family adventures, which were completed at weekends or during holidays. This became national news – a positive story that contrasted against a climate of stories focusing on obesity and nature-deficiency. This spark of interest led to some interesting opportunities and some life-changing decisions.
In 2014, Tim and Kerry quit their jobs, sold their house and took their daughters out of school for an ‘ed-venture’, living and touring around the UK in a caravan. The nomadic lifestyle continues as they travel in a motorhome around Europe on a quest for educational opportunities and adventures.
The family and their story have been an inspiration to many as they travel around. They embody a life that is about being together, making choices and sacrifices that lead to a happier life and using time wisely. The family believe that life has so much to offer and it is too easy to get swept up in modern living.
Their story has been in many papers over the last few years and the family have been invited onto Newsnight and This Morning to discuss their life and the decisions that they have made. They were asked to appear on Real Stories with Ranveer Singh in 2015 and recently recorded a podcast for Inspirational Creatives.
The Meek family also give talks and workshops at various events throughout the year. The girls impress and amaze audiences with their speaking skills. In the past couple of years they have talked at adventure festivals (Kendal Mountain Festival, Telegraph Outdoor and Adventure show, Keswick Mountain festival, Alpkit), literary festivals (Hay, Cheltenham, Bath) and lifestyle festivals (Good Life Experience, Bestival and Yestival). Tim was also asked to do a talk for BBC Radio 4 Four Thought on the issue of using the precious resource of time more wisely.
The family have co-authored and produced three books (100 Family Adventures, Learning Outdoors with the Meek family and 50 Evening Adventures).
The Meeks were one of the highlights of The Good Life Experience in 2015. They held a large -and very full- tent completely spellbound. What’s so unusual about them is that they’re a family and they all work hard to tell their story; it doesn’t just fall to Tim and Kerry. We’ve booked them again for 2016 after endless positive feedback. In late 2015 we also ran a series of Public Speaking talks with Tim in our cafe in Notting Hill which, again, were a huge success. I think that the Meeks’ story is one of the most relevant and inspiring that I’ve heard for years because there’s truly something in it for everyone. Founder, www.thegoodlifeexperience.co.uk
"The Meek's are the UK's most incredible family, hands down. Two incredible parents, so open and brave and selfless, and then the fruits of their labours, Amy and Ella. If there was ever proof that bucking the system works, then the Meeks is it! Endlessly engaging, amongst the best talks at Yestival, we've already got them down to come along next year. Amazing!" "It was a pleasure working with Tim and his family. They delivered an excellent talk at the Buxton Adventure Festival's Young Adventurers Awards Night. They understood the brief and pitched the talk at the audience of adults and young people and stuck to the allotted time and really got into the spirit of the event - even to the extent of spending the night camping at our sponsor's venue!"
